El Conquistador vs. The Invisible Man was a reoccurring wrestling event where the artist embodied a Mexican wrestling luchador in order to fight invisibility both metaphorically and literally. During more than three years of this performance, the match acted as a physical manifestation of not only a battle against societal obscurity but also an internal struggle with the complexities of the artist’s own masculine identity.
Amidst the confusion and speed of my transformation into a Mexican wrestler, I was unable to slow down to analyze all that was occurring to and around me. I am still unsure as to what it means to have become the very thing I had only, previously, critiqued—to have surpassed that energy which envelops you before and during a performative act onto something that felt to go beyond the embodiment of a character.”
